Interested in learning about extraterrestrials, paranormal phenomena, cryptozoology and parapsychology? ObscuraCon is the event for you!
Scheduled for two jam-packed days July 24-25, ObscuraCon brings together scholars, storytellers, investigators, researchers and curious minds to explore various niche interests. The weekend features keynote talks on UFOs, cryptids and the paranormal, hands-on workshops led by experts, the “First Contact” Ball and costume party, more than 30 vendors and exclusive paranormal nvestigations.
Event co-organizer Coltan Scrivner said the event is happening all day Friday and Saturday at Best Western Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center. He’s working with Danny Watson to put on the event, Scrivner said. “We’re putting together one of the coolest conventions Eureka Springs has ever had,” Scrivner said. “We have a huge range of well-known speakers, even celebrity speakers like Patti Negri from Ghost Adventures.”
Other speakers include the Paranormal Rangers, archaeologist Dr. Heather Lynn, cryptozoology researcher Lyle Blackburn and paranormal researcher Larry Flaxman. In addition to her talk, Negri will be hosting a séance at the Crescent Hotel.
The séance is a separately ticketed event, and Scrivner said it’s going to be worth it. “It’s the first sanctioned séance that’s been conducted in the Crystal Ballroom,” Scrivner said.
He’s also excited about the workshops, especially the one where Lynn will teach everyone the basics of cuneiform, the world’s oldest writing system used in ancient Mesopotamia more than 5,000 years ago.
“You’ll make your own cuneiform tablet and get to take it home,” Scrivner said.
He’s also looking forward to Vivian Wouters’ QHHT workshop. In this workshop, Wouters will guide participants through a relaxing experience in which they will receive information via images, feelings and insights from their Higher Self/Subconscious or Guides.
“All the speakers are very cool, but the one I’m most excited about is the Paranormal Rangers,” Scrivner said.
Stanley Milford Jr. and Jonathan Dover make up the Paranormal Rangers, former Navajo rangers who were in charge of the special projects task force. Together, they investigated paranormal cases. “Anything from Bigfoot to Skinwalkers to extraterrestrials and ghosts, they’re going to talk about it,” Scrivner said. “It’s like the X-Files of the Navajo nation.”
On Saturday, Ron James will host a screening of his documentary Accidental Truth, which explores government insiders’ testimonies, scientific commentary and decades of investigation into alleged UFO phenomena.
"It's going to be a lot of fun," Scrivner said. "All our speakers are talented and interesting and super diverse. Whether they're talking about weather magic or the occult or Bigfoot, there's something for everybody."
Eureka Springs is the perfect place for ObscuraCon, Scrivner said. He was inspired by the success of the Ozark Mountain UFO Festival, held in Eureka Springs for the past 39 years.
"We didn't want to replicate that. We wanted to take a piece of it and expand it to other areas," Scrivner said. "I think ObscuraCon is the broadest of any of the conventions I've seen. No matter what you're obscure interest is, you'll probably meet a speaker who talks on that."
Scrivner said the event is for visitors and locals.
"Eureka's a pretty strange place and there's a lot of weird history to it," Scrivner said. "It's really an opportunity to see everything that Eureka Springs is known for all in one place."
